Debutant Sarvesh Kushare jumped his way to the top three in the men’s high jump competition at the Monaco Diamond League 2026 on Friday. The 31-year-old jumper was making his Diamond League debut in Monaco.

Therefore, Sarvesh Kushare became only the fourth Indian athlete to log a top-three finish in a Diamond League athletics meet after discus thrower Vikas Gowda, javelin throw ace Neeraj Chopra and long jumper Murali Sreeshankar.

Sarvesh, who became the first Indian high jumper to qualify for the finals at a World Athletics Championships in Tokyo last year, is enjoying a landmark campaign in 2026.

Sarvesh had broken Shankar’s eight-year-old record

Sarvesh broke Tejaswin Shankar’s eight-year-old national record with a 2.31m leap at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2026 in Bhubaneswar last month.

Competing at the Stade Louis II in Fontvieille, Kushare cleared 2.12m, 2.16m, 2.20m, 2.23m and 2.26m in his first attempts to secure a place amongst the top three alongside Great Britain’s Jack Kimani and Ukraine’s Oleh Doroshchuk.

Kushare, an Asian Athletics Championships silver medallist, failed all three of his attempts at 2.28m, sealing the third position.

Yet, he managed to finish ahead of joint Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy and Mutaz Barshim of Qatar, who finished seventh (2.23m) and eighth (2.20m), respectively.

Doroshchuk, an Olympian and European Championships bronze medal winner, went on to win the event with a 2.32m clearance while Kimani, also competing in his maiden Diamond League like Kushare, settled for second position with 2.30m.

Sarvesh is part of India’s 32-member athletics squad for the Commonwealth Games 2026.
