The 2025–26 edition of UEFA Champions League has produced a dramatic and highly competitive series of matches. The competition began with Europe’s elite clubs battling through the new league-phase format before moving into the knockout rounds. Several traditional giants such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester City were eliminated along the way, leaving four powerful semifinalists. They were Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Paris St. Germain and Bayern Munich.

Arsenal vs Atletico games were keenly contested

The first leg of the semifinal between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid ended in a 1-1 draw. Both goals came from penalties, with Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres scoring off a penalty kick and this was followed by a Julian Alvarez goal off a penalty for Atletico. The match was a tense tactical battle featuring a controversial overturned penalty for Arsenal.

In the second leg of the semifinal, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, (who was born in England but whose parents are from Nigeria), scored the only goal of the match to give Arsenal the victory by an overall margin of 2-1. A hard shot by Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard was fisted away by Atletico goalie Jan Oblak who had to dive to his left. The quick moving striker Bukayo Saka is known for his opportunistic goal poaching, was lurking nearby. As the ball was punched away, Saka showed lightning reflexes to tap it into the net.

Arsenal’s journey to the final was built on tactical discipline and defensive strength under their Spanish manager Mikel Arteta. After topping the league phase with a perfect record, the London club edged past Bayer Leverkusen of Germany and Sporting CP of Portugal in the knockout rounds. The English team’s well-organised defence and a steady approach in midfield carried them into the second Champions League final in the club’s history.

PSG vs Bayern clash was tough

PSG, meanwhile, once again demonstrated why they are regarded as one of the strongest teams in Europe. The French champions eliminated Liverpool earlier in the tournament. The two semifinals were intense battles in which neither side was willing to surrender.

In a thrilling first-leg semifinal on April 29, PSG edged out Bayern Munich 5-4. The high-scoring match saw PSG take a 3-2 lead at half-time. It was a high-octane clash of all out attacking football that is rarely seen nowadays. Bayern had England captain Harry Kane and Colombian mastermind Luis Diaz in its line-up while PSG relied on the mercurial Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola. The duo are joint top scorers for PSG this season.

Bayern got off to a good start and were awarded a penalty when Díaz was tripped in the box. Harry Kane banged home the shot, and it was 1-0 for Bayern. But PSG lost no time in catching up as the Georgian striker Kvicha Kvaratskhelia beat Bayen and Germany goalie Manuel Neuer to level the scores. Thereafter the goals kept flowing in. Finally, the scorers for PSG were Kvicha (2), Dembele (2) and Joao Neves. For Bayern the scorers were Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Dayot Upamecano and Luis Diaz.

More cautious approach in 2nd leg

The second leg between these two teams was not a high scoring one. What the spectators saw was a more cautious approach and a tense game. Ousmane Dembele struck early for PSG before Harry Kane equalized for Bayern.  The overall score of 6-5 saw PSG through to the final.

Paris St Germain has evolved into a formidable team under the guidance of Spanish manager Luis Enrique. They are showing superb teamwork and have long moved away from the superstar egos that plagued the team a few years ago. The attacking brilliance of Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has made PSG one of the most entertaining sides in the competition.

Departure of Mbappe has not hurt PSG

All those who felt that the transfer of Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid would hurt PSG badly, were proved wrong. Many experts are of the view that PSG is the strongest club team, not just in Europe but in the entire world now.

It is a well-balanced team where each player does more than required. Front line players such as Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia take pride in their defensive work too, thereby making the team difficult to break. Under Luis Enrique, PSG utilizes an aggressive, high-press approach that often forces their opponents into errors.

PSG is a flexible outfit that is capable of playing with a high-intensity attack or a disciplined defense, according to game situations. The midfield, featuring players like Vitinha and Joao Neves, controls the speed of the game providing both defensive strength and technical attacking flair.

Arsenal and PSG have different styles of playing

The semifinals reflected two contrasting styles of football. Arsenal relied on defensive solidity, patience and efficiency – the typical approach of England clubs and English football.  On the other hand, PSG overwhelmed opponents with pace, creativity and attacking flair.

Now the tournament heads toward a highly anticipated final at the Puskas Arena. Arsenal are chasing their first-ever European Cup triumph, while PSG are seeking back-to-back Champions League titles and the chance to establish a new era of dominance in European football. Can the colorful and creative French team pull it off or will the fighting Arsenal squad known as the Gunners, shoot down their hopes? The answer will be known at the end of this month.

It is the most-watched club competition in the world and the third most-watched football competition overall, behind only the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship. The winning club can boast of being the champion club team of Europe. Spanish club Real Madrid has won the trophy 15 times which is the maximum number of victories by any club. They won it 5 times in a row between 1955 and 1960. It was then called the European Cup and the name was changed to UEFA Champions League in 1993.
