GymnoRa bag overall Team Championship at 3rd GPCP state gymnastics; Madhuram excels

GymnoRa (Chennai) gymnasts won the overall championship title at the 3rd edition of the GPCP State Gymnastics Championship which was successfully conducted at the SDAT–AGB Complex in Chennai recently.

The championship brought together participants from various clubs of districts including Salem, Madurai, Coimbatore, Erode, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Trichy, Chennai, Thiruvallur, and Kanchipuram, making it one of the largest grassroots gymnastics events in the state.

Stockli Gymnastics (Thiruvallur) finished runners-up, while Hyflyers (Salem) were placed third in the tournament which witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 450 young gymnasts and an audience exceeding 1,000 spectators.

In the boys’ team championship, Hyflyers of Salem district claimed the honours as they pushed Chennai’s GymnoRa to the second place.

GymnoRa win girls’ team championship

In the girls’ team championship, GymnoRa gymnasts reigned supreme, while Stockli of Thiruvallur finished runners-up.

Madhuram Ramesh, who participated in Level 3, of Stockli Gymnastics excelled at the event as she won two gold medals, a silver and a bronze. Madhuram, a student at Valliammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, bagged the yellow metal in the Balance Beam as she earned a whopping 9.8 points. Her second gold came in the Vault where she got 9 points. She also claimed a silver for her performance on the Floor Exercise with 8.8 points and rounded off her tally with a bronze in the Uneven Bars as she earned 8.4 points.

Telangana artistic gymnast Budda Aruna Reddy, who is the first Indian gymnast to win a bronze medal at the 2018 World Cup, presented medals to the winners.

Cash prizes of ₹20,000 for the overall champions and ₹10,000 for the runners-up were awarded. Additionally, team championships were recognised across all levels.

A key highlight of the event was the implementation of a live scoreboard system, ensuring transparency by displaying real-time scores. Certified judges from across Tamil Nadu were engaged to maintain fairness and neutrality in judging.

To encourage participation, all gymnasts received complimentary gifts such as gymnastics keychains, caps, and stickers. A DJ setup added to the vibrant atmosphere, making the event engaging for both participants and spectators.

GPCP (Gymnastics Proficiency & Certification Program) is a structured, level-based initiative designed to standardise gymnastics training. The program currently features five progressive levels and serves as a guiding framework for coaches, parents, and aspiring gymnasts. It was developed by Ragul Prabu, a five-time National gold medalist, internationally certified gymnastics coach, and founder of GymnoRa. The program is inspired by leading gymnastics systems followed in countries such as the USA and the UK and is now being adopted by multiple clubs across Tamil Nadu.

The event was graced by distinguished guests including Rajamanickam (retired senior divisional judge), Jimmie Anjana (high performance manager, Sports Authority of India), Mary Rajaty (former general manager, SDAT & senior consultant).

The championship continues to play a significant role in promoting structured grassroots gymnastics development across Tamil Nadu.
