On a historic night Stephen Eustaquio helped Canada become the first co-host nation to book a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, but it came about only after a dramatic late winner which broke South African hearts.

With both teams known for their physical strength and high fitness levels, the expectation was for a fast-paced contest from the first whistle — and the game delivered exactly that. Both sides showed their hunger and intensity, pressing aggressively without the ball as the opening exchanges remained open and evenly balanced, with both teams looking to attack.

Records broken, giants fallen and underdogs rising as WC 2026 enters knockout madness

It was a landmark occasion for both nations, as it marked their first-ever appearance in the knockout stages of the World Cup. It was also the first Round of 32 match in World Cup history, following the expansion to a 48-team tournament.

South Africa survived a relentless first half to go into the break level at 0-0. Coach Hugo Broos’s side spent much of the opening 45 minutes defending deep in a compact, narrow block, frustrating Canada’s attacking momentum.

The first major chance arrived in the 22nd minute when an unmarked Cornelius met Eustaquio’s free-kick, but his header bounced into the ground and went straight at Williams. South Africa continued to hold firm, although mistakes began appearing in their build-up play.

Canada’s best opportunities came from set-pieces late in the half. A quick sequence saw Modiba clear a dangerous effort before Williams denied a Bombito header and Buchanan’s follow-up from close range. Moments later, Canada were awarded a penalty after Laryea appeared to be brought down by Mudau, but VAR overturned the decision after replays showed the South African defender made the slightest contact with the ball.

South Africa were fortunate to remain level at half-time, while Canada were left frustrated after dominating territory but failing to convert their chances.

The pattern continued after the restart, with Canada beginning the second half on the front foot and applying more pressure. Their biggest opportunity came in the 66th minute when Millar released Oluwaseyi behind the defence. After Mudau’s sliding challenge only pushed the ball slightly further away, Oluwaseyi recovered and fired a left-footed effort towards goal, only for Williams to make a brilliant save with his shoulder. Mbokazi then produced a crucial block to deny Jonathan David from the rebound.

Canada gained even more control after captain Alphonso Davies came off the bench, as they increased the pressure on a South African defence that was forced deeper and deeper.

The final stages turned into an end-to-end battle, almost resembling a basketball game, with both teams committing players forward but lacking the final quality needed to find the breakthrough.

Just when the match appeared destined for extra time, Canada found their moment.

Eustaquio wins it for Canada

Johnston’s delivery from the right was cleared only as far as the edge of the box, where Eustaquio brought the ball down with his chest, allowed it to bounce, and unleashed a superb strike into the bottom corner, leaving Williams stranded.

It was a devastating blow for South Africa, who had fought bravely throughout but saw their World Cup dream end in the closing moments.

Canada were the better side on the day, creating the majority of the clear chances, and Eustaquio’s stunning late winner secured their place in the Round of 16 – they become the first nation and also the first co-host nation to progress to the knockout stage.
