Sahaja Yamalapalli and teenage wildcard entrant Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi endured first-round exits at the Mumbai Open 2026 WTA 125 tournament, ending India’s challenge in the singles on Tuesday.
Sahaja, the country’s top-ranked women’s singles tennis player, went down fighting against Japan’s Eri Shimizu in a tightly contested opening set before losing 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and 50 minutes.
Later in the evening, fifth seed Lanlana Tararudee of Thailand knocked out 16-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, last year’s Mumbai Open semifinalist, 6-3, 6-2, despite flashes of resistance and shot-making from the young Indian tennis player.
Earlier in the day, India’s Shrivalli Bhamidipaty and Vaishnavi Adkar had also bowed out of the tournament being played at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association.
Shrivalli put up a spirited display but was outplayed by Kristiana Sidorova, who produced a clinical 6-1, 6-3 victory over the Indian.
Vaishnavi, meanwhile, gave her all against Austria’s Lilli Tagger, the 2025 French Open junior champion, before the higher-ranked player edged the key moments in the match to close out a 7-5, 6-4 win.
Their exits ended India’s singles campaign at the Mumbai Open after Vaidehee Chaudhari and Ankita Raina had also lost their first-round matches on the opening day of the tournament.
