Kylian Mbappe struck a brace as France eased past Sweden 3-0 in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Wednesday, booking a Round of 16 meeting with Paraguay.
Why the football underdogs are winning? The tactical story behind the World Cup upsets
Bradley Barcola added France’s second goal, while Michael Olise produced a pair of assists in a commanding display from Didier Deschamps’ side, who outclassed Sweden in virtually every department. Les Bleus finished with 61 per cent possession, generated 3.17 expected goals (xG) compared to Sweden’s 0.66, and registered 25 shots to Sweden’s eight, underlining their complete control of the contest.

France threatened early through Mbappe, who thought he had given his side the lead in the 21st minute after latching onto a through ball and calmly finishing beyond Jacob Widell Zetterstrom. However, the offside flag cut short the celebrations following a tight review.
The France captain remained at the heart of every attack and came within inches of scoring again in the 32nd minute, striking the post after meeting Jules Kounde’s cutback inside the six-yard box. Moments later, Olise nearly produced one of the goals of the tournament with an audacious overhead kick that crashed against the upright before Ousmane Dembele fired the rebound narrowly wide.
Mbappe hands France the lead
France’s relentless pressure eventually paid off on the stroke of half-time. A cleverly worked short-corner routine involving Olise and Dembele ended with Mbappe cutting inside his marker before curling a composed right-footed finish into the far corner to hand Les Bleus a deserved lead.

The two-time world champions doubled their advantage eight minutes into the second half after Aurelien Tchouameni intercepted a loose pass in midfield. Olise then threaded a perfectly weighted through ball between the Swedish defenders for Barcola, who took a touch before clinically finishing beyond Zetterstrom.

France continued to create chances at will, with Zetterstrom denying Olise from close range after another swift counterattack led by Mbappe. The Sweden goalkeeper was beaten again in the 74th minute when Olise unlocked the defence with another incisive pass, allowing Mbappe to stay onside before guiding a trademark finish into the far corner for his second goal of the evening. The strike was Mbappe’s 18th FIFA World Cup goal and his sixth of the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
Sweden rarely threatened despite introducing fresh attacking options. Viktor Gyokeres forced Mike Maignan into his first significant save late in the game before Mattias Svanberg was also denied in stoppage time, but France comfortably preserved their clean sheet.
France meet Paraguay in next round
The statistics reflected France’s superiority, with Deschamps’ side recording 12 shots on target to Sweden’s three, 32 touches inside the opposition penalty area, and 485 accurate passes at an 88 per cent completion rate.

France now head to Philadelphia for a Round of 16 clash against Paraguay, carrying momentum after one of their most complete performances of the tournament. For Sweden, the defeat brings an end to a campaign that began with promise but ultimately foundered against a French side that looked every bit like genuine title contenders. It also marked Sweden’s earliest FIFA World Cup elimination since 1990.
