Former national footballer JE Sigamony Williams passed away in Hyderabad on Friday morning. He was 86 and is survived by his son Lloyd.

Williams had played Hyderabad Telephones apart from representing the state in the 1966 Santosh Trophy held at Kerala. Andhra Pradesh had emerged champions that year.

“A distinguished footballer, he represented Hyderabad Telephones and the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh State Football Team with great dedication and commitment. He was regarded as an excellent midfielder and earned the respect and admiration of the football fraternity during his playing days,” said former India captain Victor Amalraj.

“I was fortunate to witness his matches at the Gymkhana Ground, Secunderabad, and fondly remember his skill, vision, and contribution to the game. Today, a group of former footballers from Telangana visited his residence and conveyed our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family members,” Amalraj added.

“On behalf of the football fraternity, we extend our sincere sympathies to the family and pray that the Almighty grants eternal rest to the departed soul and strength and comfort to his loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace,” the former Indian captain said.

The Telangana Football Association extended its deepest condolences meeting to the bereaved family. A condolence meeting was held at the TFA office on Friday at 5 pm. It was attended by all the TFA office-bearers, referees, coaches and senior players.
