The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) will officially launch its flagship T20 league, TG20, on April 29, marking a significant step towards ‘transforming the domestic cricket landscape in the state’.

The HCA officials believe that the TG20 will be the panacea for all the ills plaguing cricket in the state. They are of the opinion that the TG20 will bring in more professionalism in cricket which the league system has not been able to do. The HCA’s official release says that the competition level in the TG20 will be high compared to club cricket, which is moderate.

They also believe that the TG20 will give players more exposure while it is very limited in league cricket and growth for the players too will be fast when compared to club cricket. It is strange that the HCA officials are comparing TG20 with league cricket. If this is their mindset, then God save cricket.

Death for league cricket?

Are the HCA officials going to further destroy league cricket? League cricket, which once upon a time was the most sought after by players from Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) too, has been dying a slow death due to the apathy of the HCA officials and corruption of the club secretaries and cricket academies.

HCA inter-district cricket

‘Pay and play’ is the norm nowadays and all the HCA officials are aware of the happenings but none of them has the guts to clean up the system and reign in the rogue elements. That’s because most of them are ‘guilty of leasing out their clubs to third parties’. Hence, they turn a blind eye to all the corruption and exploitation of players and parents.

Several complaints, over the last few years, have been made to the HCA administrators but it has all fallen on deaf ears. None of the officials are interested in addressing these issues. They are only interested in power, money and maintaining the status quo.

No attempts by HCA officials to restore league cricket

With the officials now going after the ‘golden goose’ called the TG20, league cricket is likely to be put on the back burner. Already, they are planning to have the TG20 in June-July, which actually is the peak season for league cricket.

“TG20 is not just a league but a structured talent pipeline aimed at identifying, nurturing, and showcasing players, particularly from districts, while raising the overall standard of cricket in the state,” says the HCA release.

If the same people are handling the TG20 too, how different will it be from the league cricket? How will TG20 raise the overall standard of cricket in the state? While Tamil Nadu are planning to focus on the longer format of the game to restore cricket in that state, the HCA officials want to use T20 cricket to improve the standards of the game. There could be no greater irony than this!!!

Instead of focusing so much on the TG20, the officials need to put their heads together and see in what ways they can make league cricket more competitive and strengthen the system so that the glory days are restored to Hyderabad cricket.

The HCA officials will kick off the T20 tournament by launching the TG20 logo on April 29 in a grand manner.

“Envisioned as a bridge between grassroots and professional cricket, TG20 aims to create a transparent, competitive, and high-performance platform for emerging talent. The league aligns with the vision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to strengthen grassroots structures and provide a clear pathway for district players to progress to elite tournaments such as the Indian Premier League (IPL),” says the HCA release.

The response to the Expression of Interest (EOI) for franchise ownership has been overwhelming, with strong participation from corporates across the state. The inaugural season is scheduled for June–July 2026, with detailed fixtures and team announcements expected shortly.

8 teams in TG20 inaugural season

The tournament will feature eight franchise teams and 32 matches, to be held at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Uppal, following a round-robin and playoff format.

With a strong emphasis on professionalism, transparency, and integrity, the league is expected to attract wide participation from franchises, sponsors, and stakeholders.

Beyond cricket, TG20 promises an engaging fan experience with electrifying matches and a vibrant, festival-like atmosphere.

As the league prepares for its inaugural season, one message is clear, professional preparation, discipline, and consistency will be key to success.
