We have nothing to lose, says NEUFC coach Benali ahead of season opener against Bagan

NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) are set to begin their MG Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 campaign against Mohun Bagan Super Giant at their home Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium Guwahati on Monday (October 12).

Ahead of their opening fixture, head coach Juan Pedro Benali addressed the media alongside defender Tondonba Ngasepam, discussing the team’s preparations, squad depth and expectations for the new season.

Speaking about the team’s preparations and the importance of building a balanced squad, Benali said: “This year, we have a very balanced team. We have players who can play in different positions, depending on the opponent and the style we want to play. We need to be a consistent team, and having competition within the squad is important to ensure everyone is ready.”

Assessing the challenge posed by Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Benali acknowledged the quality and experience within the opposition ranks. He said, “They are a fantastic team with a lot of quality and experience. We need to have Plan A, Plan B and even Plan C, depending on how they play and how we want to attack and defend against them.”

Looking ahead to the season opener, the head coach emphasised the importance of competing without fear and making the supporters proud. He added, “I just want my players to be healthy and my fans to smile. I want the people to come to the games, see the stadium full and feel proud of their team. We have nothing to lose. We give everything on the pitch, and after the game, we move on to the next one.”

NorthEast United FC will look to make a positive start to their campaign in front of their home supporters as they take on Mohun Bagan Super Giant, aiming to carry their preparations into a strong opening performance.
