There was a Punjabi bhangra or hook steps etc. In the midst of the joyous dances of various styles, Tilak Varma remembered the Hyderabad teen maar dance and he wanted his fellow Hyderabadi Mohammed Siraj to join him along with other members. He literally searched and dragged the pace bowler for the dance.

For the second time there were two Hyderabad players in a World Cup tournament. While former skipper Mohammed Azharuddin and left-arm spinner SL Venkatapathy Raju were not lucky, Tilak and Siraj will go down in history as members of the Surya Kumar Yadav-led Indian team which captured a World Cup title. Tilak’s grab in the deep signaled India’s win in the lop-sided final.

The third Hyderabadi to be part of the successful Indian team is fielding coach T Dilip. The Hyderabadi has been with the team for quite sometime now. He is now a regular fixture with the Men in Blue and this victory may help in getting him an extended tenure with the team.

Tilak may not have set the stands on fire but he played a good hand in India’s successful campaign while Siraj had modest returns as the fast bowler played in only one match when Jasprit Bumrah was not fit in the first match against the USA and took two wickets at Wankhede Stadium. In fact, he was drafted into the team at the last minute because of Harshit Rana’s injury. Siraj was one of the leading wicket-takers in the previous edition of the World Cup in the West Indies.

“I carried drinks throughout the tournament and bowled in the nets. These roles are just as important for the team. If the team is winning, I feel happy even by contributing from behind the scenes,” said Siraj after the game.

Tilak played as a revolving batter. He never had a fixed batting position, sometimes at the top order and sometimes at six or seven. “We had been prepared since last one-and-a-half years. We are playing in all positions, and we were prepared for batting at any positions for the team. That’s what we have decided. We were in a right mindset for batting in any positions,” he said at the post-match talk with TV commentators.

Manning the field in the deep, Tilak took crucial catches, including the last wicket. The Hyderabad left-hander said they were happy that they won the final. For the two players there will be more celebrations when they return to their hometown of Hyderabad before returning to their respective franchises for the IPL tournament that starts from March 28.

Hyderabad Cricket Association officials join the celebrations

Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) top brass, led by president Amarnath, too were present at the Narendra Modi Stadium to watch the final. The officials were seen mingling with the Indian players, especially the Hyderabadi trio, and greeting them.
