Hyderabad needed just 6.2 overs of play to grab full points as left-arm spinner Tanay Thyagarajan ran through the Tripura resistance with a six-wicket haul as the hosts carved out an innings and 40-run victory with more than a day to spare in their Ranji Trophy Elite match at the Gymkhana Ground in Secunderabad on Tuesday.

Resuming at their overnight score of 103 for seven, Sentu Sarkar, who had defied the Hyderabad attack last evening, perished off the sixth ball of the day. Tanay had Sentu caught by Tanmay Agarwal to virtually finish off the contest. Sentu failed to add to his overnight score of 27. He faced 74 balls and struck three fours in his innings.

Parvez Sultan, who hit a boundary in the morning, fell to Tanay in the next over. He was caught by Himateja after making 15 off 33 balls with two fours.

Last man Abhijit Sarkar hit a six in his 10-ball nine but Tanay finished off the Tripura innings by having Sandip Sarkar (0) caught by Rahul Singh. Tripura were bowled out for 120 in 41.2 overs.

Tanay bags nine wickets in the match

Tanay, who had taken three wickets in the first innings, claimed six for 52 in 16.2 overs. He finished with match figures of nine for 89.

Sandip’s eight-wicket haul in vain as Hyderabad on verge of innings win against Tripura

Tripura batters failed to rise to the occasion in both the innings and paid the price. Despite a good start in the first innings where openers Bikramkumar Das (50) and Hrituraj Roy (33) had put on 80 on the board; the rest fell like a house of cards.

Vihari, Mandeep disappoint

The performance of former India, Hyderabad and Andhra skipper Hanuma Vihari made a huge difference for Tripura. The right-handed bat fell for 0 and 1 in the match and both times perished to Tanay Thyagarajan.

Former India and Punjab bat Mandeep Singh too failed to contribute much. He scored 24 in the first innings but made only 1 in the second innings when his experience was much needed to shepherd the innings.

For the hosts, it was a happy outing as they bagged seven points from the match and began the season on a rousing note. However, they need to be wary of the challenges ahead as they will face tougher teams in the coming few weeks.

It was a good first-class debut for left-arm spinner G Aniketh Reddy and all-rounder M Ruthvik Yadav.

Brief scores: Tripura 134 in 44 overs & 120 in 41.2 overs (Sentu Sarkar 27; Tanay Thyagarajan 6/52) lost to Hyderabad 294.
