Top seed P Ramesh will take on fourth seed Zoha Qureshi in the girls’ singles final of the Tirumala Sreedhar Garu ATF 14&U Grade-A (South Asia) tennis tournament at Lake View Tennis Academy in Hyderabad on Friday.
P Ramesh brooked no challenge against P Vattaprambil as the top seed toyed with her rival. Ramesh took the first set at 6-2 and then had an even easier time in the second set. Ramesh won the second set and the match at 6-1.
The other semifinal was a much tougher affair as Zoha had her hands full against S Mardaniya. The fourth seed had to bring out all her reserves to tame a fighting Mardaniya. Zoha began well as she took the first set comfortably at 6-4 but Mardaniya turned the tables in the next one to make the contest a gripping affair.
Mardaniya won the second set 6-3 and that set up a tantalizing third set. In the decider, both players fought tooth and nail with neither of them willing to yield ground. However, Zoha just about managed to pip her rival as she won 7-6(8) to enter the final.
Daungkhiaw-Ramesh win doubles title
In the girls’ doubles final, top seeds P Daungkhiaw of Thailand and P Ramesh got the better of fourth seeds P Vattaprambil and Krishika Gautam 6-3, 6-3. Ramesh will have a shot at a double when she takes on Zoha in the singles’ final.
Puneet Manohar will meet Aarav Chhallani in the boys’ singles final
In the boys’ singles final, top seed Puneeth Manohar will take on fourth seed Aarav Chhallani. One of them will be able to make it a double on the morrow.
In the semifinals, Puneeth tamed S Chintagumta 6-1, 6-3 but Aarav had a tough battle on hand. Aarav managed to pip Sujai Pothula in a three-set battle. After winning the first set at 6-3, Aarav lost his bearings to go down in the second one at 1-6. However, he regained his footing in time to win the decider 6-2 and enter the final.
Aarav and Puneeth triumph
In the boys’ doubles final, Top seeds Aarav Chhallani and Puneeth Manohar overcame a fighting S Laoamormpanich of Thailand and Ho Wan Yeung of Hong Kong in a tough three-setter. Aarav and Puneeth came from a set down to pip their rivals.
The Indians had a slow start and their rivals capitalized on it. Laoamormpanich and Yeung took the first set at 6-4 but lost their way in the second set as the Indians recouped well. Aarav and Puneeth took the second set at 6-2. In the decider, both teams fought valiantly but the Indians managed to prevail 10-6 and claim the title.
