Loyola Academy hammered St Mary’s 52-8 on the first day of the Osmania University Inter-College Basketball Championships for men at Loyola Academy in Alwal, Hyderabad, on Thursday.

Hosts Loyola Academy brooked no challenge from their rivals as they walked over them to a thumping victory. Anthony was the topscorer for the winners with 12 points to his credit.

In the closest match of the day, Vignan Jyothi managed to eke out a narrow one-point win over Lord’s Engineering. Vignan Jyothi scored a 17-16 win with Arya scoring six points.

Later, Vignan Jyothi fell to Mathrusri, who scored a convincing 25-11 victory with Bilal getting 12 points. Mathrusri also defeated Badruka 26-19 as Shashank scored 16 points for the winners, who maintained a clean slate on the opening day.

MJCET defeated NGIT 24-5 in the first game but crashed to a 21-47 loss to Bhavan’s later in the day. St Joseph scored a 29-6 win over Keshav Memorial as Ashish got 10 points for the winners.

Rev Fr Dr NB Babu SJ, principal, Loyola Academy, was the chief guest at the opening ceremony. Other guests of honour were Sr Prof Rajesh Kumar, secretary, ICT (men), Osmania University and Rev Fr K Anil Kumar SJ, vice-principal and director of sports, Loyola Academy.

Results: Lord’s Engineering 16 lost to Vignan Jyothi 17 (Arya 6); MJCET 24 beat NGIT 5; Badruka 19 lost to Mathrusri 26 (Shashank 16); St Joseph 20 (Srini 6) beat LFDC 12; Keshav Memorial 14 beat Haji Ghouse 4; St Mary’s 19 (Srihith 4, Eshaan 4) beat IIMC 9; Bhavan’s 47 (Siddharth 8) beat MJCET 21; Vignan Jyothi 11 lost to Mathrusri 25 (Bilal 12); St Joseph 29 (Ashish 10) beat Keshav Memorial 6; St Mary’s 8 lost to Loyola Academy 52 (Anthony 12).
