The Indian women’s hockey team continued its impressive run at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, defeating hosts Japan 3-1 in their Pool B match in Kakamigahara on Friday. The victory, India’s fourth in as many games, confirmed their place in the semifinals with one pool match against Singapore still to play.
India had earlier opened their campaign with a thumping 19-0 win over Uzbekistan, followed by a 17-1 dominant victory against Indonesia and then a 20-1 demolition of Thailand. The hard-fought win over Japan on Friday saw Lalremsiami, Ishika and Navneet Kaur scoring for India.

India started with intent despite hot afternoon conditions at the Kawasaki Juko Stadium in Kakamigahara, immediately putting Japan under pressure with a full-press. Neha had the first opportunity in the opening minute, but her reverse hit went wide, before Navneet found space on the right wing but saw her effort go into the side-netting.
The sustained pressure finally paid off in the fifth minute. Navneet’s initial hit was slowed down by a Japanese stick inside the circle, but Lalremsiami was perfectly positioned to collect the ball and slot it past goalkeeper Yu Kudo to give India a 1-0 lead.
India earned another PC in the seventh minute. The injection to the second castle set up Navneet but her hit was blocked. Japan moved the ball quickly for a counter-attack. India didn’t have the numbers in a defence, but the shot at goal was well saved by Bichu Devi with her outstretched leg. The rebound went high, resulting in a penalty corner to Japan, but the grounded flick attempt by Maho Ueno was wide of the mark.
India dominate possession
India continued to dominate possession and earned another penalty corner in the 13th minute after Navneet’s shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. However, a poor stop denied India the chance to test the Japanese defence. Despite Japan creating occasional openings, India maintained their 1-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The pattern continued in the second quarter, with India controlling possession while Japan largely relied on counter-attacks. India’s compact midfield and defensive structure ensured the hosts found little room to build sustained attacks.
The game moved from end to end, with Japan trying desperately to find the equaliser and India looking for a cushion.
India eventually doubled their advantage in the 30th minute. After Navneet’s direct penalty-corner attempt was saved, the rebound fell to Ishika, who made no mistake and found the back of the net to make it 2-0 at half-time.
India carry their momentum forward
India carried their momentum into the third quarter. Navneet produced another moment of brilliance in the 36th minute, receiving the ball inside the circle, moving to her right and then scooping it over the Japanese goalkeeper to extend India’s lead to 3-0.
Japan struggled to contain India’s attacking pressure, with Ishika and Rutuja coming close to adding another goal. Captain Salima Tete also set up Navneet late in the quarter, but Kudo produced a good save to keep Japan within three goals.

Japan finally found a breakthrough in the opening minute of the fourth quarter when Shiho Kobayakawa found the gap to Savita Punia’s left with a tomahawk, reducing the deficit to 3-1 and sparking celebrations among the home supporters in the stands.
India remained composed in the remaining part of the final quarter and continued to create opportunities. Navneet came close from another penalty corner in the 50th minute, while Baljeet and Lalremsiami combined well two minutes later, only for the latter’s effort to deflect fly over the crossbar.
Japan came close to scoring again after a trapping error by Sushila allowed a turnover, but goalkeeper Savita was wide awake to palm the shot at goal away. However, it resulted in a penalty corner, which saw India defending the set-piece attempt successfully. Deepika almost scored on the counter-attack but her reverse-hit attempt lacked the power to threaten the Japanese post.
