Dr Anandeshwar Pandey, executive director of Handball Association India (HAI), welcomed the latest communication from the International Handball Federation (IHF), dated October 9, 2026, reaffirming its recognition of Handball Association India as the sole legitimate representative of handball in India.
In an official letter addressed to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, the IHF stated that it considers the matter concerning HAI’s recognition closed, following its correspondence with the IOA during September 2026.
The IHF has further confirmed that its head office has decided not to refer the matter to the IHF Council for consideration of a possible suspension of handball activities in India. Accordingly, international-level handball activities involving HAI will continue uninterrupted.
The international governing body also clarified that the forthcoming HAI General Assembly and elections remain unaffected and are expected to take place in 2027, following their formal announcement. The IHF reiterated that individuals who wish to contribute to the administration and development of Indian handball may contest the elections, subject to the eligibility criteria and requirements prescribed under HAI’s statutes and regulations.
In another significant development, the IHF has requested the IOA to reinstate Handball Association India as a full member, with all corresponding membership rights, enabling the federation to discharge its responsibilities and participate fully in the IOA’s activities in accordance with the IOA Statutes.
Pandey stated that the IHF’s communication provides important clarity regarding the administration of handball in India and the continuation of the country’s international handball activities.
He emphasised the importance of institutional stability, transparent administration and a collective commitment to the development of handball, with a focus on creating greater opportunities for Indian players, coaches and officials to participate and excel at national and international levels.
The development marks an important step towards clarity and continuity for the Indian handball community, as the sport looks ahead to its forthcoming organisational and electoral processes.
