Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy called upon student community to cultivate a keen interest in sports and strive to excel at it even while pursuing academic excellence.

The chief minister was speaking at the inauguration of the Telangana Legislators’ Sports and Cultural Meet 2026 at the LB Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday.

“I have a singular appeal to the student community. Alongside your academic pursuits, cultivate a keen interest in sports and strive to excel in them,” he said.

Revanth laments lack of Olympic medals for country

“Despite having a population of 1.4 billion, our country has consistently failed to secure medals at the Olympics. In contrast, South Korea, with a population of just 30 million, secured 32 gold medals. Remarkably, the South Korean Sports University alone accounted for 16 of those gold medals,” Reddy lamented and added that the state government was committed to encouraging and supporting athletes in every possible way.

Highlighting the importance of a sports meet for legislators, he said: “For those who are constantly immersed in politics, working tirelessly and without pause to resolve public issues, this presents a wonderful opportunity.

“While they may not play with professional perfection here, LB Stadium serves as a platform for them to demonstrate magnificent sportsmanship.”

Reddy also lauded sportspersons who are part of his Cabinet. “Individuals who honed their skills on this very ground are now members of the state cabinet. Azharuddin, who brought glory to the nation through cricket, is a member of the Cabinet. Vakiti Srihari, who played Ranji Trophy cricket, currently serves as the minister for sports.”

He also said that sports were accorded immense importance in united Andhra Pradesh. “However, following the formation of Telangana, the spirit of sportsmanship seemed to have waned. That is precisely why, upon assuming office, our people-centric government introduced a comprehensive Sports Policy.

“With the aim of unearthing ‘gems hidden in the soil’, talented athletes from the grassroots, we organized the CM Cup,” he stated.

Messi’s Hyderabad visit thrills fans but the broader picture remains bleak

“It was with the specific intent of infusing a spirit of sportsmanship that we brought the global football legend, Lionel Messi, to Hyderabad. Regrettably, opposition leaders attempted to stir up a controversy regarding this initiative. The arrival of such a football icon in Hyderabad served to showcase our state’s global standing and reputation to the entire world,” Reddy said.

“We are promoting sports to encourage people to stay away from farmhouse parties and steer clear of intoxicants,” he added.

Will develop LB stadium along with other stadia: Revanth

The chief minister also stated that the LB Stadium was confined solely to political activities. “We are formulating plans to develop the LB Stadium to international standards. We also intend to develop the Gachibowli Stadium to a level capable of hosting global sporting competitions. The government will also undertake the development of the Begumpet hockey ground,” he stated.

“Of the seven individuals who previously won medals for the country in football, four hailed from our region. We are determined to reignite that sporting spirit and nurture athletes to once again reach that level of excellence,” Reddy said.
