Chennai Super Kings sealed a league double over Mumbai Indians with an eight-wicket win in front of a capacity crowd at Chepauk in Chennai on Saturday night. The hosts put up an all-round show to decimate Mumbai Indians and consign their IPL 2026 campaign to the dust.
All-rounder Jamie Overton led the Chennai bowlers as they restricted Mumbai to a modest score and then skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma struck half-centuries to complete the rout. Overton was all praise for the Chennai fans.
Chennai Super Kings produce a clinical show, romp to eight-wicket win over Mumbai Indians
“Getting two points against a very strong Mumbai side gives us confidence going into the upcoming games. Chepauk has one of the most passionate crowds I have played in. When I first came here last year, I remember saying in an interview that it was almost louder than a Premier League game. They are among the best crowds; they follow us everywhere. It is amazing to get all the support here, and I am loving my time in Chennai,” Overton said on JioHotstar’s Google Search AI Mode Match Centre Live.

Ashwin lauds Gaikwad show at Chepauk
India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin was all praise for Ruturaj Gaikwad. He said Gaikwad played a very sensible innings to steer Chennai home. “Everyone was talking about his form. This innings was a result of the previous game. It was a challenging wicket, the GT game, and the time he spent in the middle and the knock he played, you cannot compare it with the likes of Vaibhav Suryavanshi or Abhishek Sharma. On wickets like these, this is how you should play,” said Ashwin.
“Ruturaj played with a great tempo in this game and read the conditions well. His role was important; if CSK had lost one or two more wickets, the pressure would have increased on their batting line-up. He took responsibility, and the way he played, CSK are becoming more dangerous with every match,” he added.
Kartik stepped up, says Pujara
Young Kartik Sharma showed that he had the skills to succeed in the IPL. Former India player Cheteshwar Pujara was all praise for the youngster. “This was a very important innings for young Kartik Sharma. CSK have shown a lot of faith in him and given him multiple opportunities. This match against Mumbai was the perfect stage for him to deliver and repay that trust. He did exactly that.

Kartik Sharma stepped up and took that responsibility well. I am really happy for him because he had not been scoring runs, and there was a lot of talk about his potential, said Cheteshwar Pujara
“On a difficult pitch where spin was expected to dominate the middle overs, CSK needed an Indian batter to partner Ruturaj. Kartik stepped up and took that responsibility well. I am really happy for him because he had not been scoring runs, and there was a lot of talk about his potential. Finally, that trust has paid off for CSK,” Pujara said.
Chennai’s next game against Delhi crucial
Chennai are on the sixth position with eight points and look to be in the hunt for the top four this season. On CSK’s chances of making the playoffs, Pujara said: “Chennai will back themselves to make the top four. At the start of the season, they looked like a different side. Their batters were struggling for form, but now, Ruturaj has found his touch again. Sanju Samson is also contributing with runs. Jamie Overton’s bowling in the middle and death overs has given them a big boost. CSK will fancy their chances against LSG, who are at the bottom of the table and out of form. The next game against Delhi is the key. If CSK win that, they will have a real shot at qualifying for the playoffs.”

Suryakumar Yadav yet again perished while looking good for a big innings, Pujara said: “Suryakumar Yadav looked really good on a tough pitch against CSK. He was timing the ball well and playing his shots confidently. Even the shot he got out to, was a good stroke, but when you are low on form, the ball often finds the fielder. That’s exactly what happened. It was a soft dismissal. If you look at the season so far, Surya’s lack of big runs has been a concern for Mumbai Indians. It is affecting their middle order. But against CSK, he looked in good touch. It was just an unfortunate way to get out.”

Jasprit Bumrah alone cannot do everything or carry the whole team. Others also need to take responsibility with the ball, pick wickets and support him,” says Harbhajan Singh
MI suffering because of poor bowling: Harbhajan
Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh said that poor bowling returns are making life difficult for Mumbai Indians this season. “How do you win games of cricket if you don’t have bowlers who can pick wickets? As a bowler, you are supposed to take wickets, not just bowl at a good economy. Anyone can do that. The game of cricket still remains the same; if you are a batter, you have to score runs, and if you are a bowler, you have to take wickets. If neither fulfils their role, how will the team get the job done? Bumrah alone cannot do everything or carry the whole team. Others also need to take responsibility with the ball, pick wickets and support him,” he said.
