Seeded players Dev Ruparelia and Tanvi Patri brooked no challenge as they cruised to comfortable victories over their respective opponents to win the Under-19 boys’ and girls’ singles titles at the Yonex-Sunrise All India Junior Ranking Badminton Championship in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Seventh seed Tanvi Patri of Odisha had lost a final last month in Vijayawada. Her opponent was local girl Surya Charishma Tamiri and was ranked higher than her. On Saturday, Tanvi’s opponent too was a local girl in the form of Tanvi Reddy Andluri but the latter was unseeded at the tournament.

Putting aside all sentiments, Tanvi made sure there were no surprises or shocks in the final. The first game as a closely fought affair as both shuttlers kept pace with each other but the 14-year-old Odisha girl came through 23-21.

The loss unsettled the Telangana shuttler who was unable to regroup and fight back. Tanvi took the game comfortably at 21-16 to run away with the crown.

In the boys’ singles, Maharashtra’s Dev, who is the fourth seed, was stretched but not enough to sweat it out. Unseeded Nishchal Chand of Uttarakhand fought bravely in both games and gave some anxious moments for his opponent. However, Dev put in the big points when it mattered to wrap up the issue 21-19, 22-20.

Diya bags a double

The boys’ doubles title was bagged by fifth seeds Charan Ram Thippana and Hari Krishna Veeram Reddy of Andhra Pradesh. They defeated Aanayan Borah of Assam and Malsawmhlua of Mizoram 21-12, 23-21.

Diya Bheemaiah B of Karnataka achieved a double by winning the girls’ doubles and mixed doubles titles. In the girls’ doubles, she teamed up with Baruni Parshwal of Haryana to down Telangana pair Lakshmi Ridhima Devineni and Sarayu Suryaneni 21-11, 21-12. Telangana’s hopes of winning a medal were dashed.
