After an intensely fought first half, Saint’s broke free after the lemon break to get the better of BHEL Club 75-50 in their Level II encounter of the GM Sampath Kumar Annual League Basketball Championship at the YMCA in Secunderabad.
Saint’s had just a one-point lead at half-time (34-33) but they turned the match on its head in the second half to score a runaway victory.
BHEL began the game well as Nikhilesh and Joseph found the basket regularly. Nikhilesh used his height to his advantage and dominated from the paint area while Joseph scored a three-pointer as BHEL got 17 points in the first quarter.
On the other hand, Saint’s focused on scoring through fast breaks by Aijaz and Harsha. The ploy paid off as they managed to score 19 points and take a 19-17 lead by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Saint’s scored 15 points thanks to Bhanu’s work on the court. BHEL, however, were not far behind Nikhilesh being just unstoppable and scoring at will. BHEL logged in 16 points to bridge the gap to just one point (33-34) at half-time.
After change of ends, Saint’s tightened their defense to restrict BHEL to just 10 points and in turn scored a massive 19 points with Steven dominating the court. Saint’s took a decisive 53-43 lead by the end of the third quarter.
In the last quarter, Saint’s continued the same tight defensive pressure which was too much to handle for the BHEL hoopsters and they could add just another 7 points to their score. On the other hand, Saint’s added 22 points to win the match comfortably at 75-50.
