Arunkumar claims a golden double, Aneeksha wins singles title at Under-14 AITA tennis

Kerala’s Arunkumar Dhaiwik clinched a grand double and Gavinolla Aneeksha of Telangana triumphed in the girls’ singles final at the Under-14 AITA National Series Tournament at the Sania Mirza Tennis Academy in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Arunkumar overcame a fighting Aarush Kumar of Telangana in a tough three-set final. Aarush was off the blocks quickly and pulled off a 7-5 in the first set. However, Arunkumar came back strongly to win the second set at 6-4 and level the scores.

In the decider, Arunkumar had it quite easy as Aarush lost the will to fight it out and succumbed. Arunkumar won the set 6-2 to take home the singles title.

In the doubles, Arunkumar with Vishnu Pandey of Maharashtra had to wage a grim battle before subduing a fighting Nihal S Reddy of Karnataka and Ali Khan Rabeeb of Delhi in yet another three-set battle.

In a grimly fought encounter, Arunkumar and Vishnu took the first set 6-4 but lost the next one 2-6 as Nihal and Ali Khan upped the ante.

In the decider, both pairs put up a fantastic show and neither side was willing to give it up. However, Arunkumar and Vishnu managed to win the decider 18-16 to claim the honours.

In the girls’ final, Aneeksha was taken to the wire before Shaikh Myra of Maharashtra conceded the tie in the decider.

Shaik Myra began well and edged Aneeksha 6-4 in the first set, but the local lass kept pace with her rival in the second before prevailing 7-5 and taking the contest to the third set.

In the final set, Aneeksha was leading 3-0 when Myra conceded the tie.

Aneeksha falters in doubles final

Aneeksha missed out on double as she and Chitluri Vara Anuha went down to Vaishnavi Balajee and Kanishka Govind of Tamil Nadu in straight sets. The Tamil Nadu girls won the first set easily at 6-2 but encountered stiff resistance from the Telangana girls in the second one. They, however, managed to pull off a 7-6(5) win to emerge victorious

Results (finals): Girls’ singles: Gavinolla Aneeksha (TS) beat Shaikh Myra ((Mah) 4-6, 7-5, 3-0 (conceded).

Girls’ doubles: Balajee Vaishnavi (TN) / Govind Kanishka (TN) beat Chitluri Vara Anuha (TS) / Gavinolla Aneeksha (TS) 6-2, 7-6(5).

Boys’ singles: Arunkumar Dhaiwik (Kerala) beat Aarush Kumar (TS) 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Boys’ doubles: Pandey Vishnu (Mah) / Arunkumar Dhaiwik (Kerala) beat Reddy Nihal S (Kar) / Ali Khan Rabeeb (Del) 6-4, 2-6, 18-16.
