The race for the Golden Boot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 is in full flow. France’s Kylian Mbappe and the ageless Lionel Messi of Argentina both have six goals to their credit. But Mbappe is placed slightly ahead because he has given more assists. Hot on their heels is the prolific England captain Harry Kane and the blond bomber from Norway, the 6 feet 5 inches tall Erling Haaland. Both of them have scored five goals as of now.

From the ‘Hand of God’ to the ‘Feet of Messi’, Argentina blessed with 2 incomparable genius

But among the leaders, Mbappe has the best chance to claim the Golden Boot for a variety of reasons. Messi seems to have pulled out an unknown reserve of youthful stamina. Nobody had expected him to play such a big role for Argentina. But his age may go against him as the tournament progresses. He will have to play more and more matches and that may slow him down.

The year when Mbappe was born, Messi was already making his mark as a prodigiously talented 12-year-old boy at the La Masia football academy run by Barcelona under the supervision and mentorship of Barcelona’s superstars.

Norway & England may not go far

But as far as Erling Haaland is concerned, his drawback may arise from the fact that Norway may not go up to the last stages of the event. If Norway loses in the round of 16, Haaland will not be able to play as many matches as Mbappe or Messi.

Now, coming to Harry Kane, he has a proven track record on the biggest stage. He previously won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup. He is also one of the most lethal finishers in Europe, regularly netting dozens of goals for his club, Bayern Munich.

Will the world see a reincarnation of Diego Maradona at the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

But to win this year’s prize, his chances largely depend on how far England goes into the tournament.  England is predicted to reach at least the quarterfinals. Having just defeated DR Congo 2–1 in the Round of 32, England are moving on to face Mexico in the Round of 16 on July 5 at the Mexico City Stadium.  If England beat Mexico, their next opponent could be Brazil. Things will get progressively more difficult for England from here on.

France are going strong

That is unlikely to be the case with France. The Frenchmen are going very strong and they have a great chance of reaching the final. With the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola and Rayan Cherki in their line-up, France look very strong. They will definitely progress and so Mbappe is likely to have more opportunities to score goals.

Mbappe’s World Cup statistics at the age of just 27 is unbelievable.  In the overall scenario, Mbappe has played a total of 18 World Cup games in his career and scored 18 goals. Messi has played 29 games and scored 19 goals. So, it looks very likely that Mbappe will ultimately overtake Messi, if not this time, then definitely in the future.

What makes it really astonishing is that this is Mbappe’s third World Cup appearance. He is already ahead of legends like Ronaldo, Gerd Muller, Pele, Cristiano Ronaldo and many others.

He scored 4 goals in 2018 as a teenager, helping France win the trophy and becoming one of the youngest players ever to score in a World Cup final. He followed that with 8 goals in 2022, winning the Golden Boot and delivering a legendary hat-trick against Argentina in the final. Now, in 2026, he has already added 4 more goals to his World Cup tally.

The only player above him now is Lionel Messi, who took the all-time World Cup scoring crown in the 2026 edition at the age of 39. The Argentine icon has found the back of the net 19 times in the marquee event.

But Messi had six World Cup campaigns to climb to the top. Mbappe has reached the level in three campaigns. Age is firmly on his side. At this pace, the question is not about whether or not Mbappe becomes the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer. It’s about when. And how untouchable the record looks when he is done.

Mbappe may rise further

The 2026 edition is likely to see the further rise of Mbappe who seems ready to take over the unofficial title of World’s Best footballer. Both Ronaldo and Messi have proved everything that they set out to prove. There are no new goals beckoning them ahead and both must have begun the countdown for retirement.

The fact that they are still playing at the top level is itself a remarkable feat for both of them. But nowadays the question in every football lover’s mind is: how much longer can they continue? Logic seems to indicate that this is the right time to leave on a high note.

Mbappe, on the other hand, is in the prime of his football career. He is 27 years old and has already set benchmarks that will be hard to emulate. While playing in the FIFA World Cup of 2018, Mbappe became the youngest French player to score a World Cup goal.

In June 2024, he signed a five-year contract with the Spanish giant Real Madrid. He made his debut for Los Blancos, as Real Madrid is known, in the 2024 UEFA Super Cup and scored a goal in his first match. In recent weeks, although the club’s performance has not been as good as fans wanted, Mbappe’s personal form has been commendable.

Mbappe’s past achievements

In 2018 FIFA World Cup, after having scored four goals in total, Mbappe finished in the list of the second highest goal scorers of the event and as a member of the victorious French team, he held aloft the coveted trophy. He was also named as the Best Young Player of the tournament. Three years later Mbappe helped France to victory in the UEFA Nations League and became the top scorer in the final.

At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, France reached the final again before losing to Argentina. Mbappe won the Golden Boot in the tournament and scored a hat-trick in the final match and scored an amazing 8 goals in total. He is one of only two players to have scored in two consecutive World Cup finals (the other being Brazil’s Vava).

Kylian Mbappe’s father and mother were both athletes. As a child, he went to a private school where his football skills stood out more than his academic achievements. At that stage his idols were Zinedine Zidane, Ronadinho, Thierry Henry as well as Cristiano Ronaldo from whom he is now ready to snatch the crown.

What makes Mbappe lethal?

Mbappe is a versatile forward, can play as a winger on either flank but is also capable of playing in the center as a main striker. These qualities make him a big asset to any team and his coaches/managers cannot do without his services.

Another quality that makes him unstoppable is his pace and close ball control when dribbling at high speed. His vision, tactical intelligence, and his ability to beat the defenders by making attacking runs into open space both on and off the ball create endless problems for the opposition.

The legendary coach-cum-manager Arsene Wenger has compared him to Thierry Henry and several great names in history. Added to his intelligence on the field is his speed of movement. While playing in a game for Paris Saint Germain against Real Sociedad club, Mbappe was recorded to be running at 36 kmph. That would translate to a 100-metre run in 10.9 seconds.

So, 2026 could be the beginning of a new phase in international football. It is likely that the era of Ronaldo and Messi will gradually fade away and be replaced by the reign of Mbappe. If he continues to work hard and if fate does not deal him a cruel blow through injury, then Mbappe could become one of the greatest footballers in history.

No player has won Golden Boot twice

Mbappe and Harry Kane are looking to bag the top goal-scorer prize for a second time. England’s Kane won the award in 2018, while Mbappe was top scorer in 2022. However, no player has ever won the award more than once.

Are we going to see history being made in 2026?
