It did not end in a fairytale finish as Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale’s landmark doubles run at the Chennai Open 2026 WTA 250 tennis tournament came to an end at the final hurdle on Sunday.

Vaishnavi and Rutuja lost the title decider against the Swiss team of Naima Karamoko and Simona Waltert 6-2, 6-0 in a rather one-sided affair on the hard courts of the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam, Chennai.

The defeat, though, took little shine off what has been an incredible week for the Indian duo, who had already rewritten the record books by becoming the first-ever all-Indian pair to make a doubles final at a WTA Tour-level event.

The Indians had earned their title shot with a comeback win over the second-seeded Polish-American pair of Weronika Falkowska and Alana Smith 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 in Saturday’s semifinals.

Vaishnavi and Rutuja had earlier reached the last four by edging the British-American pair of Jodie Burrage and Robin Montgomery 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

The Indian duo had opened their campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over fourth seeds Madeleine Brooks and Amelia Rajecki of England in the Round of 16.

India’s home challenge in singles had ended on Friday with teenager Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi’s exit in the quarterfinals. The teenager became the first Indian to reach the last eight of a singles competition at a WTA Tour-level event since Sania Mirza in 2012.

Maaya also made the quarters in the doubles draw with partner Shrivalli Bhamidipaty after defeating the third seeds, Aneta Kučmová and Aneta Laboutkova of Czechia, in the opening round. However, the duo bowed out after losing to the Dutch-Hungarian duo of Isabelle Haverlag and Panna Udvardy in the last eight.

Olympian Ankita Raina partnered Japan’s Hiroko Kuwata in Chennai but the duo failed to progress beyond the opening round, losing 6-1, 6-1 to Australia’s Gabriella Da Silva-Fick and Kazakhstan’s Zhibek Kulambayeva.
