Telangana governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Wednesday stated that sports serve not only to foster physical fitness but also act as the very lifeblood for personality development, discipline, and the effective discharge of police duties.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the 74th BN Mullick All India Police Football Championship at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad, the governor recalled his immense passion for sports and noted his past experience serving as the minister for sports in the Uttar Pradesh government.

He lauded the extraordinary sight of police personnel from all corners of India setting aside their uniforms to come together, clad in sports jerseys, to celebrate friendship and engage in healthy competition. He expressed hope that the participation of women police personnel in these competitions would increase significantly in the future, emphasizing that their involvement would further strengthen the forces and foster a more inclusive environment.
Shukla further explained that for a police officer, sports are not merely a hobby; rather, “they keep them mentally agile and physically prepared to meet the rigorous demands inherent in the performance of their duties.”
Commending Telangana for emerging as a hub for world-class athletes through new initiatives such as the Young India Sports University, the governor advised all sportspersons to uphold the true spirit of sportsmanship by competing with full enthusiasm and impartiality. Emphasizing that the dedication displayed is far more important than victory or defeat, he extended his best wishes to all the athletes, expressing hope that they would enjoy the competitions held in the beautiful city of Hyderabad.
Telangana DGP B Shivadhar Reddy expressed his immense joy and pride that Hyderabad was hosting this prestigious championship. He noted that the governor’s presence not only enhanced the grandeur of the event but also provided a fresh boost of inspiration to young talent. Reddy explained that qualities such as teamwork, strategy, endurance, quick decision-making, and trust in colleagues, all of which are reflected in the game of football, are essential attributes for every police officer. He described the championship as not merely a competition, but a celebration of mutual cooperation, camaraderie, and unity among police forces across the country.
He reminded everyone that such platforms serve as a reminder that, despite serving in different states, our collective and singular objective remains the protection of the nation’s citizens, the upholding of the law, and the maintenance of peace and order.
Finally, the DGP urged the athletes to remember that they are representing their respective teams and to demonstrate honest and impartial sportsmanship throughout the competition. He concluded his speech by congratulating the staff who worked tirelessly to organize this mega-event and by expressing his hope that the best team would emerge victorious.
Delivering the welcome address, IG (sports) Gajarao Bhupal recalled that football enjoyed immense popularity in the state of Telangana in the past, noting that several athletes from the police department had excelled in the sport on a global stage. He stated that the football matches would be conducted across five grounds in Hyderabad.
Cyberabad police commissioner Dr M Ramesh expressed his gratitude to the governor, the DGP, and other dignitaries who attended the inaugural ceremony of the football championship. He extended special thanks to the governor for inaugurating the championship.
Following a march-past by football teams from various states, the governor, the DGP, and other dignitaries watched the inaugural match, held as part of the opening ceremony, for a brief period.
