Rugby Premier League kicks off in Hyd on June 16; minister Srihari unveils official jersey

Rugby Premier League (RPL) Season 2 will be held at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium, Gachibowli, Hyderabad, from June 16, 2026.

The league will feature 10 teams, including six men’s franchises and four women’s teams, competing across 48 matches. More than 70 international Rugby Sevens players from 19 countries, along with some of India’s finest rugby talent, are expected to participate in the tournament.

The Rugby Premier League organisers on Monday called on Telangana sports minister Vakiti Srihari at the Minister’s Quarters and formally invited him to attend the inaugural ceremony of the event.

On the occasion, Srihari unveiled the official RPL jersey and extended his best wishes to the organizers for the successful conduct of the league.

Speaking on the occasion, the organizers stated that as India’s premier franchise-based rugby competition, the Rugby Premier League represents a significant step forward in the development of the sport and supports the country’s broader sporting and Olympic aspirations.

Minister Srihari reiterated that the Telangana sports department is committed to promoting sports and will continue extending support to league competitions across various sporting disciplines to encourage athletic excellence and participation.

Among those present at the meeting were Jadcherla MLA Anirudh Reddy, Sports Authority of Telangana managing director Dr Sonibala Devi, Rugby India president Rahul Bose, GMR Sports representative Sujoy Ganguly, Sports Authority of Telangana director Basha, PRO Kaleru Suresh, RPL organizers, and other officials.
