Football Olympian Syed Habibul Hassan (Hamid) passed away at 4 pm on Friday. He was 85 years old.

He represented India at the 1960 Rome Olympics and had an illustrious football career, playing for Hyderabad Sporting Club, Hyderabad Police, Mohammedan Sporting Club (Calcutta), and the South Central Railway.

Hamid is survived by one son and four daughters. His wife predeceased him.

Hamid was one of the players from the golden era of Indian football. He was a skillful inside forward and admired for his quick turns, sharp snap shots, and sudden bursts of speed that troubled many defenders of his time.

Shabbir Ali, Victor Amalraj mourn Hamid’s death

Hamid was the last of the Olympians from the city of Hyderabad.

The football fraternity mourned the loss of a talented player from India’s glorious football era.

Former India captains Shabbir Ali and Victor Amalraj were at a loss of words as they mourned the death of the legendary Hamid.

“An era has come to an end. May his soul rest in peace,” said Victor Amalraj.

TFA pays tribute to Hamid

The Telangana Football Association (TFA) mourned the demise of Hamid. A condolence meeting was held on Friday at the Telangana Football Association office. It was attended by TFA secretary G P Palguna, the TFA office-bearers, coaches and referees.  The members gathered to pay tribute and honor Hamid’s memory.

The TFA also extended its heartfelt condolences to Hamid’s family. “His passion, dedication, and contribution to Indian football will always be remembered,” says a TFA release.
