Bangladesh dethrone India by virtue of penalties in SAFF U-20 Championship final

Bangladesh edged defending champions India out 4-3 on penalties after a goalless regulation time in the SAFF Under-20 Championship 2026 final at the National Football Stadium in Male, Maldives, on Friday.

This was Bangladesh’s second title, having defeated Nepal 4-1 in the 2024 final. India’s title defence ended but they remain the most successful team in the tournament’s history with four titles.

The result marked a reversal of last year’s competition, where India had triumphed 4-3 in a shootout against Bangladesh after a 1-1 draw.

The two sides also crossed paths in the group stage this year. India topped Group B after a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh and a 3-0 win over Pakistan, before cruising past Bhutan 5-0 in the semifinals. Bangladesh edged past Nepal 1-0 in their last four clash.

Bangladesh keeper saves Rishikanta shot

On Friday, the shootout swung both ways before Bangladesh held their nerve to lift the trophy. Rishikanta Laishram’s opening penalty was saved by Bangladesh goalkeeper Ismail Hossain Mahin, while Omang Dodum, the tournament’s joint top scorer with three goals, blazed his effort over the bar on India’s final attempt. Md Arbash, Samson Ahongshangbam and Vishal Yadav converted from the spot for India.

Bangladesh converted through Md Mursed Ali, Chandon Roy and Md Yousuf Ali before Samuel Raksam struck the crossbar to give India a glimmer of hope. However, striker Ronan Sullivan calmly slotted home the decisive kick to hand Bangladesh the SAFF title.

The match was a cagey affair, with both teams aware of the stakes. India and Bangladesh began cautiously, prioritising defensive discipline over attacking risk. As a result, chances were limited in the opening half.

Bangladesh attempted to stretch the play by using the flanks, but India’s defence, which had impressed throughout the tournament, conceding just once, remained organised. The backline stayed compact and effectively dealt with crosses and forward runs, ensuring that Bangladesh were restricted to half-chances.

India, however, struggled to find fluency in the attacking third. Players like Omang Dodum and Vishal Yadav, who had been influential earlier in the tournament, received limited service.

India, however, started the match brightly and looked the more enterprising side early on. Inside four minutes, Rohen Chaphamayum’s inviting cross found Vishal Yadav, whose header drifted wide.

Bangladesh gradually settled into the contest and began to threaten, particularly down the flanks. Ronan Sullivan, who scored the winning penalty later in the match, came closest in the 18th minute but failed to test Indian goalkeeper Suraj Aheibam.

A defensive lapse from Bangladeshi keeper Mahin in the 32nd minute briefly opened the door for India, but Bangladesh’s defenders recovered in time to avert danger. India continued to apply pressure through set-pieces but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.

The second half mirrored the first in intensity, with both teams pressing aggressively. India came agonisingly close in the 64th minute when Mahin misjudged a long throw from Roshan Thangjam, only for the loose ball to go begging in front of an open goal.

The final entered a tense, scrappy phase in the last 20 minutes as both teams pushed for a breakthrough but were repeatedly let down by fatigue and missed chances.

A 73rd-minute substitution saw Rishi Singh replace Rohen Chaphamayum. The move nearly paid off with Rishi delivering a low cross in the 83rd minute but Vishal Yadav failed to connect cleanly with the goal at his mercy.

Bangladesh pushed forward in four minutes of stoppage time, but India held firm to force penalties. The shootout that followed carried the tension of the contest, but Bangladesh ultimately prevailed to deny India the title.

Organised by the South Asian Football Federation, the SAFF Under-20 Championship is an annual football tournament. It was played in the under-19 age bracket last year.
