Animesh Kujur completed a sprint double while two-time Olympian Tajinderpal Singh Toor returned to form with his best effort in nearly three years at the Indian Athletics Series 3 2026 in New Delhi on Saturday.

Competing at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Animesh Kujur won the men’s 100m race in 10.28 seconds in a photo finish, sharing the same timing as T Tamilarasu, with Gurindervir Singh third in 10.40.

The photo finish was in favour of Kujur, who clocked 10.272s while Tamilarasu’s had 10.280s. The 22-year-old Animesh’s time was just 0.10s shy of his national record time set in an athletics meet in Greece last year.

“It (the race) got pretty close, but it’s okay,” Kujur said. “This was the season opener (in outdoors), my first race. And I am happy with the timing… Last year I did 10.5 in the season opener and this year 10.28. It’s good.”

Animesh later added the 200m title, clocking 20.74 seconds to finish ahead of Vishal TK (21.01) and Dharmveer Choudhary (21.03), sealing a sprint double on the day.

Toor claims shotput title

Tajinderpal Singh Toor, a two-time Asian Games champion, claimed the men’s shotput title with a best throw of 21.03m, his first effort beyond the 21m mark in nearly three years. Karanveer Singh (19.30m) and Anurag Singh Kaler (18.03m) completed the podium.

In the men’s javelin throw, Rohit Yadav won the contest with a mark of 82.17m, beating Asian Championships silver medallist Sachin Yadav (81.95m), while Yashvir Singh was third with 81.61m.

Meanwhile, Kishore Jena, silver medallist from the last Asian Games in Hangzhou, could not breach the 80m mark in the javelin, finishing with a best of 77.79m. Kishore, whose personal best is 87.54m, last went past the 80m mark at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Asian Games medallist Hima Das returned to competition after a two-year absence but struggled for pace, finishing with 25.42s in the 200m and 57.94s in the 400m, placing well outside the leading times. Hima’s time in the 200m was 2.5 seconds slower than her personal best and a little over 7 seconds in the 400m, in which she holds the national record.

Pooja wins high jump

In the women’s high jump, Pooja clinched the gold with 1.90 metres jump. She was followed by Khyati Mathur and Reet Rathor.
