Indian athlete Lokesh Sathyanathan won the men’s long jump title at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships 2026 with a national record leap of 8.21m in Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA, on Saturday.
Competing in the NCAA circuit for Tarleton State, the 26-year-old Indian athlete produced the mark at the Randal Tyson Indoor Center to improve on his previous indoor national record of 8.01m, achieved at the same venue last month.
Sathyanathan had become the first Indian athlete to breach the eight-metre mark indoors after jumping 8.01m at the Tyson Invitational in February, improving the previous Indian indoor national record of 7.97m set by Jeswin Aldrin in 2023.
Lokesh Sathyanathan’s outdoor personal best stands at 8.02m, recorded in Clovis, California, in 2023.
On Saturday, he delivered the decisive effort in the fourth round, soaring to 8.21m to move to the top of the standings. He later backed it up with another impressive jump of 8.17m on his final attempt.
“Arguably one of the greatest long jump performances in Indian athletics history!” Tejaswin Shankar, India’s men’s high jump and decathlon national record holder, posted on his social media page.
USA’s De’Aundre Ward finished second with 8.20m, while former Zimbabwean national champion Tafadzwa Chikomba took third place with 8.15m.
Saturday’s effort also moved Sathyanathan to third on the all-time Indian long jump list across indoor and outdoor competitions, behind Jeswin Aldrin’s national record of 8.42m and Murali Sreeshankar’s 8.41m.
All national records are subject to ratification by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). The NCAA Division I Indoor Championships 2026 is classified as a World Athletics Category C event.
Sathyanathan has competed in five long jump events so far this season. He opened his campaign with a third-place finish in Texas with a 7.80m jump in January before winning a meet in Oklahoma a week later with 7.83m.
At the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships last month, he finished second with a best effort of 7.71m.
