Former Director General of Police (DGP) of undivided Andhra Pradesh, H J Dora, passed away on Friday, while undergoing treatment at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). He was 83.
The 1965-batch senior IPS officer had been battling kidney-related ailments for some time and was receiving regular dialysis. His health took a critical turn this morning, and despite the efforts of doctors in the Acute Respiratory Care Unit (ARCU), he breathed his last on Friday morning.
A leading figure in Indian law enforcement, Dora served as the DGP of Andhra Pradesh between 1996 and 2002.
Dora was deeply involved in sports bodies
Dora was also a former Hyderabad Hockey Association (HHA) president and former Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association president. He was closely related with various sports bodies and events in the state. He had taken a keen interest in the development of sports, especially hockey.
Sportspersons recall Dora’s contribution to sports
Former India volleyball captain Venkatanarayana, who is also sports officer of the Telangana RTC, expressed deep condolences on the passing away of Dora.
He said that Dora’s services in organizing the National Games in Hyderabad in 2002, during his tenure as the president of the Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association, were invaluable. He also noted that during his time as the managing director (MD) of the RTC, Dora had championed the creation of employment opportunities for athletes.

Dr B Lakshmaiah (president, Telangana Junior College Physical Directors Association), Professor Jaganmohan Siddha (vice president, State Degree College Physical Directors Association) and N Sadguru (joint secretary, State Tennikoit Association) also paid tribute to Dora and recalled his services to sports and sportspersons. They conveyed their heartfelt condolences to his family members.
SATS chief Shivsena Reddy condoles Dora’s death
Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS) chairman Shivsena Reddy expressed deep condolences on the demise of Dora.
On this occasion, he recalled that Dora’s services to both the Hockey Association and the Olympic Association were truly memorable. He noted that it was during his tenure, and with the cooperation of the Sports Authority, that the AstroTurf ground was laid at the Begumpet Hockey Stadium, and the Olympic Bhavan was built at the Lal Bahadur Stadium.
He further highlighted that Dora, who was instrumental in bringing the National Games to Hyderabad, accorded high priority to sports and athletes, not only within the police department but across the various other departments he served.
He stated that both the police department and the sports department would long cherish and remember his invaluable contributions.
