Tajinderpal Singh Toor wins shot put title

Tajinderpal Singh Toor reclaimed the men’s shot-put crown with a best effort of 20.51m at the Indian Open Throws Competition 2026 in Patiala on Saturday.

Competing at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS), the two-time Asian Games champion outclassed the field, finishing well ahead of second-placed Karanveer Singh (19.36m) and bronze medallist Sanyam (18.28m).

Samardeep Singh Gill, who had beaten Tajinderpal Singh Toor four consecutive times last year, could only manage 16.88m to finish 11th. He was the reigning champion heading into the national athletics meet.

Toor holds India’s national record of 21.49m in men’s shot put. Set in 2021, the mark stood as the Asian record for nearly three years. He won the Indian Open Throws Competition in 2024 with a distance of 19.82m and also won gold at the meet in 2023.

Sanjana wins javelin throw

Earlier in the day, Sanjana Choudhary claimed the women’s javelin throw title with a best effort of 54.20m. Annu Rani, who holds the national record in the event, did not compete.

The opening day also featured hammer and discus throw senior events, with Tanya Chaudhary (women’s hammer throw), Yogita (women’s shot put), Seema (women’s discus throw) and Damneet Singh (men’s hammer throw) topping their respective competitions.

The Indian Open Throws Competition 2026 will continue at the same venue on Sunday.

Women’s discus throw: 1. Seema (57.78m); 2. Priya (56.16m); 3. Sanya Yadav (52.80m)

Men’s hammer throw: 1. Damneet Singh (70.64m); 2. Ashish Jakhar (68.09m); 3. Devang (63.27m)

Men’s shot-put: Tajinderpal Singh Toor (20.51m), 2. Karanveer Singh (19.36m); 3. Sanyam (18.28m).
