It is turning out to be a fusion of cultures and minds. Two young women from different continents becoming best friends is not much of a news unless they have an illustrious pedigree and, in their own right, are no less a celebrity. The India and Australian rivalry on the cricket field has always been intense and bitter with no leeway given. Sachin Tendulkar and Matthew Hayden represent the best of that rivalry, but their off-spring are charting a different course – a New World order – altogether off the field.
The records and achievements of Sachin Tendulkar are unparalleled in the history of cricket. Among other feats, the Master Blaster has accumulated the highest number of runs (more than 34,000) in Tests and ODIs combined. On the other hand, Australia’s burly batter Mathew Hayden is also famous for his outstanding performances, the most noteworthy one being a score of 380 against Zimbabwe at Perth in 2003. It still stands as the second highest individual score in Test cricket history (after Brian Lara’s 400 not out).
On numerous occasions these two cricketing giants, Tendulkar and Hayden, were involved in thrilling battles in cricket arenas across the world. The Indian ace has hammered no less than 20 centuries against Australia (11 in Tests and 9 in ODIs) while Hayden has piled up 8 centuries against India (6 in Tests and 2 in ODIs). The batting averages of both batters are close to each other. For more than a decade, they symbolised the intense and fierce rivalry between two arch-rivals India and Australia.

But the next generation has chosen to follow a gentler path. Their respective daughters, namely Sara Tendulkar and Grace Hayden, have woven a friendship that totally ignores scoreboards and national colours. The two young women have often been spotted chatting and walking on sunny beaches in Australia or strolling through the bustling lanes of Mumbai. Their friendship proves that the spirit of sport can unite more than it divides. They have embarked on a whole new world of friendship, camaraderie and wholesomeness.
Inseparable companions who share common interests
Common friends have described them as inseparable companions who share a love for travel, fashion and adventure. Photographs of their road trips across Queensland or cosy evenings in Mumbai cafes often go viral, delighting cricket fans who once watched their fathers fight it out on the field. What was once a famous rivalry between their fathers, has now blossomed into a heart-warming cross-border bond.
The tall and slim Grace Hayden has stepped confidently into the world of sports media. After growing up amid the cameras that followed her father’s career, she has become a natural presenter and commentator. Last month, she made an impressive debut in tennis coverage for the Australian Open on Sony Sports’ Extraaa Serve programme, completing a journey from theatre enthusiast to poised television professional.

Like Grace, Sara is equally accomplished
Sara Tendulkar is equally accomplished. She wears many hats. Trained in Clinical and Public Health Nutrition at University College London, she balances modelling assignments with her role as director of the Sachin Tendulkar Foundation. She has also launched a Pilates Academy in Mumbai, reflecting her passion for health and well-being.
Despite demanding schedules, the two friends often find time for each other. Recalling a recent assignment that the duo undertook for Queensland Tourism, Grace told India Today that she played the role of a tour guide to Sara around Brisbane and the Gold Coast. “Sara is so smart and well educated,” she said warmly. “We grew up in different countries but in similar worlds because our dads were two of the best in cricket. Sharing those common experiences created an instant bond.”

Grace thinks of India as a second home
Grace has also fallen in love with Indian food, culture and the warmth of the people. She said that India is like her second home. Meanwhile, Sara connects with more than 5.8 million followers on Instagram, where she posts her brand endorsements along with candid glimpses of her family life and her many interests.
With so much shared ground between them, their friendship seems destined to endure. It is a new kind of partnership. This partnership is not built on runs but on laughter, fun and mutual respect. And just like the long stands their fathers used to have with their teammates, the stand between their daughters too looks like it will be a long and memorable innings.
