Krishna Menon betters own indoor shot-put national record in Albuquerque athletics meet

Krishna Jayasankar Menon bettered her own national record in the women’s indoor shot-put event at the New Mexico Team Open 2026 athletics meet in Albuquerque, USA, on Saturday.

Krishna, the daughter of former Indian basketball players Prasanna and Jayasankar Menon, won the title with a 16.63m throw and improved upon her previous mark of 16.03m, which she also achieved in Albuquerque last year.

As per rules, the national record will be subject to ratification by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

Hannah Richardson (15.94m) and Alesha Lane (14.52m) finished second and third, respectively.

Krishna won the title with a 16.63m throw and improved upon her previous mark of 16.03m

Competing in only her second meet this year after winning the Nevada International earlier this month with a 15.99m effort, Krishna achieved her best mark of the evening with her second toss.

She began the competition with a modest 14.45m before improving it to 16.63m with her second throw. After fouling her third attempt, Krishna registered 14.82m and 14.92m before committing another foul with her final throw.

The 23-year-old became the first Indian athlete to breach the 16m mark in women’s indoor shot-put last year with her 16.03m effort at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships and broke Poornarao Rane’s previous record of 15.54m.

India’s outdoor national record of 18.41m in the women’s shot put belongs to Abha Khatua, who achieved the feat at the Federation Cup 2024.

The New Mexico Team Open is a World Athletics Championship is a World Athletics category F event.
