Rishabh overcomes Rohith for title, Harsha cruises to victory in women’s final at SMTA

Rishabh Agarwal and Harsha Oruganti won the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively at the AITA Rs 2 lakh prize money tournament for men and women at the Sania Mirza Tennis Academy in Hyderabad.

In turned out to be a contrasting final in the men’s and women’s singles. Rishabh overcame a fighting Rohith Gobinath to win the men’ singles, while Harsha eased past Aniha Gavinolla in the women’s final.

The men’s doubles title was won by Antariksh Verma of Rajasthan and Pranav Korade of Maharashtra. They defeated Chandan Shivaraj of Karnataka and Yashwanth Gundla of Andhra Pradesh 6-4, 3-6, (10-4).

The women’s doubles crown was clinched by Telangana duo Sai Ananya Varanasi and Omna Yadav Davunaboina as Aarushi Raval of Gujarat and Vennela Gaarugupati of Telangana conceded the tie. They were lead 3-1.

Rishabh comes from behind to pip Rohith

In the men’s singles final, Rishabh came from behind to overcome his Tamil Nadu rival. In a keenly fought contest, Rohith took the first set at 6-4 but Rishabh fought back valiantly. He won the second set at 7-6(2) to take the fight into the decider. In the decider, Rohith faded away as Rishabh upped the ante. The Telangana player took the set at 6-3 to run away with the crown.

In the semifinals, both the finalists had an easy time as they won their matches in straight sets. Rohith defeated Mayand Tewary of West Bengal 6-3, 6-4 and Rishabh packed off Sandesh D Kurale of Maharashtra 6-3, 6-1.

Harsha proves handful for Aniha

The women’s singles final, on the other hand, was a rather tame affair as Harsha proved quite a handful for her statemate Aniha. Harsha won in straight sets to wear the crown. Harsha took the first set at 6-3 and then blanked her rival Aniha 6-0 in the next one.

In the semifinals, Aniha defeated Sai Ananya Varanasi in straight sets, but it was not an easy encounter. Sai Ananya gave her rival a fight but was unable to hit winners when it mattered most. Aniha won the contest 6-3, 6-4.

On the other hand, Harsha was given a mighty scare by Anjhalle Meka of Telangana in the first set. Harsha was stretched by Anjhalle but the former managed to pull off a 7-6(5) win. In the second set, Harsha brooked no challenge as she blanked her rival Anjhalle 6-0 to book a berth in the final.
