Avni stuns top seed Sarayu in final, Akhil emerges boys champion in U-19 badminton

Unseeded Avni Vikram Govind pulled off a major upset as she defeated top seed Sarayu Suryaneni in straight games to clinch the girls’ singles title at the Yonex Sunrise 12th Telangana State Junior (Under-19) Badminton Championship 2026 at the Adira Badminton Academy in Manikonda, Hyderabad, on Sunday.

Hyderabad’s Sarayu Suryaneni, who was stretched by fourth seed Praanjala Nisarga of Ranga Reddy, was unable to match Ranga Reddy shuttler Avni’s powerplay. The top seed put up a fight in the first game but was unable to overcome Avni.

Avni kept her rival at bay right through the closely fought first game which went to the wire. Avni prevailed 15-12 to gain the upper hand in the contest.

Smitten by the loss of the first game, Sarayu threw in the towel as Avni took complete charge of the proceedings. Avni romped to an easy 15-8 win in the second game to lay her hands on the coveted title.

Top seed Sarayu manages to overcome Praanjala, to meet Avni in girls’ singles final

Third seed Hamsini Chadaram of Medchal finished third as he defeated Praanjala Nisarga in a tough three-game encounter. Hamsini began well as she won the first game at 15-9 but Praanjala came roaring back in the second game.

Praanjala took the second game at 15-8 to push the match into the decider. However, Praanjala caved in meekly in the decider as Hamsini upped the ante. Haminsi won the game 15-5 to end up third.

Aaradhya-Akshaya win girls’ doubles title

In the girls’ doubles final, Aaradhya Reddy Hanumaiah Gari and Akshaya Chowdary Aluru of Karimnagar defeated Anusanjana Murali and Gade Stuthi Grace of Medchal in another closely fought encounter. Aaradhya and Akshaya won 15-11, 15-13.

In the boys’ singles final, top seed Akhil Reddy Bobba of Ranga Reddy overcame a fighting Shashank Vanamala of Nalgonda in straight games to end up as champion. Akhil Reddy won the final 15-11, 15-11.

Sai Nachiketh Bhatraju finished third as his opponent Sri Adithya Harshavardhan had to retire. Sai was leading 15-10 in the first game.

Sai Siddharath wins a double

The boys’ doubles final was won by Sai Siddharath Rayaprolu of Hyderabad and Showrya Kiran J of Warangal who defeated G Santosh and NJ Joel in straight games. The final was a keenly contested affair as both pairs put their best foot forward.

Sai and Showrya won the first game after a grim battle at 15-13 but weathered a storm in the second game as Santosh and Joel put up a brilliant fight. However, Sai and Showrya managed to prevail 16-14 and clinch the title.

Sai Siddharth Rayaprolu made it a grand double by winning the mixed doubles title along with Lakshmi Ridhima Devineni. The Hyderabad shuttlers overcame Showrya Kiran J of Warangal and Aaradhya Reddy Hanumaiah Gari in two tightly fought games.

Showrya Kiran had won the boys doubles title in the company of Sai Siddharth but only one of them would be able to complete a double. In the end it proved that Sai Siddharth could bag the honours as he and Lakshmi won the tie 15-11, 15-11.

Results: Boys’ singles (finals): 1-Akhil Reddy Bobba (RR) beat Shashank Vanamala (NLG) 15-11 15-11.

3rd place: Sai Nachiketh Bhatraju (SRD) beat Sri Adithya Harshavardhan (Mancherial) 15-10 (retd).

Boys’ doubles (final): Sai Siddharth Rayaprolu (HYD) / Showrya Kiran J (WGL) beat G Santosh / N J Joel (MDBA) 15-13 16-14.

Girls’ singles (final): Avni Vikram Govind (RR) beat Sarayu Suryaneni (HYD) 15-12 15-8.

3rd place: Hamsini Chadaram (MEDCHAL) beat Praanjala Nisarga (RR) 15-9 8-15 15-5.

Girls’ doubles (final): Aaradhya Reddy Hanumaiah Gari / Akshaya Chowdary Aluru (KMR) beat Anusanjana Murali / Gade Stuthi Grace (Medchal) 15-11 15-13.

Mixed doubles (final): Sai Siddharth Rayaprolu / Lakshmi Ridhima Devineni (HYD) beat Showrya Kiran J (WGL) / Aaradhya Reddy Hanumaiah Gari (KMR) 15-11 15-11.
